Paphiopedilum godefroyae (Godefroy-Lebeuf) Stein

Described: Godefroy-Lebeuf in L'Orchidophile, 830 (1883)
Transferred: Stein in Stein's Orchideenbuch, 468 (1892)
Etymology: Named for the wife of the French nurseryman, Godefroy-Lebeuf, who first flowered the plant in Europe. Collected in the Birdsnest Islands of Thailand by Murton and Alabaster.

Leaves: 4-6, up to 14 cm long, 3 cm wide, above mottled dark and pale green, below purple-spotted
Inflorescence: 1- (rarely 2-) flowered, 4-8 cm long, purple, shortly pubescent
Bloom: extremely variable, 4-9 cm wide

Ecology: usually in pockets of limestone rocks at less than 20 m elevation, some receiving an occasional dousing of sea water
