- Etymology: Derived from the Latin niveus, meaning snowy; named for the pure white base color of the bloom.

Plant Habit
- Leaves: 4-6, 8-19 cm long, 2-4 cm wide, above mottled pale and dark green, below heavily spotted with purple, basal margins ciliate
- Inflorescence: 1- (uncommonly 2-) flowered, 6-25 cm long, purple, densely short-pubescent
- Bloom: 6-8 cm wide
