- Etymology: Named for J. Esquirol, who collected the first plants

Plant Habit
- Inflorescence: hairs shorter than the typical variety
- Bloom: differs from the typical variety in having longer, slightly narrower petals with a more ovate, acute dorsal sepal
- Plant: can grow to 50+ growths in nature
Habitat Data
- Distribution - this variety inhabits the eastern part of its range
- Elevation: 500-1100 m
- Peak Flowering in the Wild: March-May, flowers open with flat, straight petals, but the margins quickly become undulate
- Ecology: vertical and near-vertical limestone slopes
- Mean Temperature Range: 12-23° C
- Light: light shade
- Medium: C, pH 7-7.86, leaf litter rich in humus
