- Etymology: Named for Frederick Sander, English nurseryman.

Plant Habit
- Leaves: 4-5, up to 45 cm long, 4-6 cm wide, glossy green
- Inflorescence: 2-5 flowered, purple-red-brown, shortly purple-pubescent
- Bloom: ~7 cm wide, petals 30-100 cm long
Habitat Data
- Distribution - found in and around Gunung Mulu National Park
- Elevation: 100-500 m
- Peak Flowering in the Wild: April-June
- Ecology: found at the top of steep dolomite limestone pinnacles
- Mean Temperature Range: 22-25°C
- Light: moderately deep shade
- Medium: calcareous, pH 7.3-7.5, mosses and leaf litter, roots attached to rock
- Water (D-drier, M-moderate, W-wetter) -

Notes:
- Disappeared from cultivation around the turn of the 20th century. Rediscovered by Sheila Collinette in 1982 in Gunong Mulu National Park.
- The widely distributed Orchid Zone cross 'Deep Pockets' x 'Jacob's Ladder' turned out to be Prince Edward of York (sanderianum x rothschildianum)
