Phragmipedium lindleyanum var. sargentianum (Rolfe) Gruss

• Basionym: Phragmipedium sargentianum Rolfe in Orchid Review, 4: 332 (1896)
• Etymology: Named for Prof. C.S. Sargent, then Director of the Harvard Arboretum and editor of Garden and Forest.

Plant Habit

• Leaves: up to 120 cm long, 5 cm wide
• Inflorescence: fewer-flowered than the typical variety
• Bloom: 8-11 cm wide, larger than the typical variety, more red
• Plant: larger than the typical variety

Habitat Data

• Distribution: Phrag. lindleyanum var. sargentianum, "is a native of the Pernambuco Province of Brazil, no doubt from its mountainous interior, and probably from the chain of the Cariris or Tabatinga, which are clothed with forests." (Hooker 1895)
  
• Elevation: 650-850 m
• Peak Flowering in the Wild: August-November
• Ecology: near the bases of trees or in rocky niches amongst grasses on 30° granite slopes
• Mean Temperature Range: 18-23°C
• Light: light-moderate shade
• Medium: thick layer of leaf mould, humus
• Water: constant moisture, plants found in or near water seepages
