Phragmipedium vittatum (Vellozo) Rolfe

• Basionym: Cypripedium vittatum Vellozo in Flora Fluminensis, 9: 62 (1831)
• Transferred: Rolfe in Orchid Review, 4: 332 (1896)
• Etymology: "The specific epithet means longitudinally striped and probably refers to the yellow leaf margins, although the illustration in the original description does not show this feature." (McCook 1989a)

Plant Habit

• Leaves: 30-55 cm long, 2-4 cm wide, margins yellow
• Inflorescence: 3-6 flowered, unbranched, blooming sequentially, 50-80 cm long, dark brown-purple, sparsely hirsute
• Bloom: greenish-purple to pale yellow-brown
• Plant: rhizomes short, plants clumped

• Peak Flowering in the Wild: October-March
• Ecology: found in peat bogs (Fowlie 1973) and "on rocky wet slopes and on rocks along creek margins" (McCook 1989a)

• Medium: acidic peat muck
• Water: constantly wet
