

Paphiopedilum liemianum (Fowlie) Karasawa & Saito
- Described: Fowlie in Orchid Digest, 33(2): 55 (1971), based on material collected on Gunung Sinabung in northern Sumatra
- Transferred: Karasawa & Saito in Bulletin of the Hiroshima Botanical Garden, 5: 57 (1982)
- Etymology: Named for Liem Khe Wie (A. Kolopaking), who sent the first specimen to Fowlie.

Plant Habit
- Leaves: 4-7, 16-24 cm long, 3-5 cm wide, below purple-spotted, entire margins ciliate. Fowlie (1985) described 4 types of leaf patterns among a colony growing side-by-side: (i) glossy green, (ii) distinctly but lightly mottled (most common), (iii) bright green and highly mottled, and (iv) mottled glossy darker green
- Inflorescence: several-flowered, opening sequentially, internodes ~3 cm long, purple, finely pubescent

- Bloom: 8-11 cm wide

- Peak Flowering in the Wild (first flower on the spike): June-July
- Ecology: found on limestone cliffs near waterfalls, occasionaly found on the roots of trees
- Mean Temperature Range: 20-22°C

Notes:
- Fowlie (1985) described a colony of Paph. liemianum growing within arms reach of a colony of Paph. tonsum: "One wonders if the mottled foliage found in some examples of P. liemianum may have arisen from the occasional introduction of P. tonsum genes."
